SALUDA COUNTY, S.C. — The Saluda County community is mourning the loss of two individuals following a devastating two-vehicle crash that occurred on Monday, October 27, 2025, along Highway 178. The Saluda County Coroner’s Office confirmed that a second victim, identified as 35-year-old Rakeem West of Batesburg, South Carolina, has tragically passed away as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

According to officials, the incident occurred when a 2005 Honda Accord, driven by West, was traveling west on Highway 178 and collided head-on with a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse headed east. Authorities reported that the Honda Accord was evading law enforcement at the time of the crash when it crossed the centerline and struck the Chevrolet.

Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol stated that both vehicles carried two occupants each. The impact was severe, leaving multiple people injured and two lives ultimately lost.

At the scene, 76-year-old Shirley Fincher of Saluda, a beloved passenger in the Chevrolet Traverse, was pronounced deceased due to fatal injuries suffered in the collision. On Wednesday morning, October 29th, officials confirmed that Rakeem West, the driver of the Honda Accord, succumbed to his injuries at Prisma Health Richland, despite the best efforts of medical personnel.

The drivers of both vehicles and the remaining passenger were initially transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Saluda County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic crash, including the events leading up to the police pursuit and the fatal impact.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can change on the road. Two families — one mourning a young man gone too soon, and another grieving a cherished elder taken unexpectedly — are left to navigate unimaginable loss.

Friends, family, and community members have expressed deep sorrow for both victims. Rakeem West, remembered by those close to him as a devoted father, friend, and hardworking man, leaves behind loved ones struggling to come to terms with his sudden passing.
