CHESTER, Calif. — A deep sense of sorrow now hangs over the communities of Oroville and Magalia after a devastating rollover crash on Highway 36 claimed the lives of 23-year-old Jace Turner of Magalia and a 26-year-old man from Oroville early Friday morning. The fatal incident occurred in the quiet hours between late Thursday night and dawn on Friday, leaving families, friends, and neighbors grieving two lives taken far too soon.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash involved a 2001 Lexus SUV traveling eastbound on Highway 36, just west of the North Shore Campground near Lake Almanor. For reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle suddenly veered off the roadway at an undetermined speed. The SUV rolled multiple times, tumbling down a steep, brush-covered embankment before coming to a stop among thick trees. The crash site was hidden from the road, and it was only discovered when a passerby noticed the wreckage and alerted authorities.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but tragically, there was nothing that could be done. Both occupants of the vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victims have since been identified as 23-year-old Jace Turner of Magalia and a 26-year-old man from Oroville, whose name is being withheld pending notification of additional family members. Authorities noted that neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt, a factor that may have contributed significantly to the fatal outcome. The violence of the crash left the vehicle heavily damaged and far off the roadway.
CHP officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Early findings suggest that alcohol may have played a role, though toxicology results and further analysis will be necessary to confirm this. Investigators are also examining whether speed or other environmental factors contributed.
The loss has left both communities stunned and heartbroken. Turner, remembered by friends as a warm, spirited, and kind-hearted young man, was known for his easy smile and love for the outdoors. He had been working in the area and often spent weekends near Lake Almanor—one of his favorite places. Family and friends describe him as someone who brought light and laughter wherever he went.
The 26-year-old Oroville man was likewise deeply connected to his community and loved ones. Friends speak of him as hardworking, loyal, and generous—someone who could always be counted on. His absence will be felt throughout many lives and relationships that he touched.
As grief settles across the region, this tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of how quickly lives can change or be lost on the road. The CHP emphasized the importance of wearing seatbelts and making safe, responsible choices when driving.
“This crash is a painful example of how quickly lives can be lost,” a CHP spokesperson said. “Wearing a seatbelt and making responsible choices on the road can make all the difference.”
In the days ahead, loved ones will gather to remember, honor, and celebrate the lives of these two young men — their joy, their laughter, and the memories they leave behind. Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be shared soon.
May they rest in peace, and may their families find strength and support during this incredibly difficult time.
