RICHMOND TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Shanelle Aviles of Lancaster County, who tragically lost her life in a devastating multi-vehicle crash that also claimed the life of a young child on Route 222 north, near the Kutztown Road overpass in Richmond Township.
According to the Berks County Coroner’s Office, the fatal crash occurred when the vehicle in which Shanelle was a passenger crossed over the center grass median and collided head-on with an SUV. The impact was severe, sending both vehicles into chaos. Police reported that after the collision, the car went over a bridge, crashing onto the road below, while the SUV spun into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, which struck it moments later.
Authorities said three of the four people inside the car were ejected from the vehicle due to the force of the crash. Tragically, Shanelle Aviles and an 18-month-old child, whose identity has not yet been released, both died from their injuries. The 27-year-old driver and a 7-year-old boy were rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. The SUV driver sustained only minor injuries, while the tractor-trailer driver was uninjured.
