In Loving Memory of Marquis Champion

A wave of heartbreak has swept through Milwaukee following the tragic death of 16-year-old Marquis Champion, who was fatally shot late Monday night near 79th and Hampton Avenue. The senseless act of violence also left two others injured, marking yet another devastating moment in a city struggling with ongoing gun violence.

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting just before midnight. Upon arrival, they discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Marquis, only 16 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts from first responders. Two additional victims, whose identities have not yet been released, were transported to a nearby hospital and are expected to recover.

Police say the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under active investigation. No arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning, and detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, emphasizing that even the smallest tip could help bring justice for Marquis and his loved ones.

“He was just a kid — full of life, always smiling,” said a close friend. “It’s hard to believe he’s really gone. He didn’t deserve this.”

Family members and friends describe Marquis as a bright, respectful, and kind-hearted young man with big dreams for his future. He loved spending time with his family, playing basketball, and was well-liked among his peers for his warm personality and sense of humor.

“Marquis had so much potential,” shared one teacher. “He was the kind of student who made people laugh and helped others when they needed it. This loss is absolutely devastating.”

Community members gathered near the scene Tuesday afternoon, lighting candles, releasing balloons, and praying for peace. Many spoke through tears, calling for change and an end to the violence that has claimed far too many young lives in Milwaukee.

“We’re tired of losing our children,” said one local pastor. “Every time a life like Marquis’s is taken, a piece of our community dies too.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Milwaukee Police Department at (414) 935-7360 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS.

In loving memory of Marquis Champion (2009–2025) — a beloved son, friend, and young soul gone far too soon. May his family find comfort in the love surrounding them, and may justice be served in his name.
