WILBAR, N.C. — The Wilkes County community is grappling with a profound loss following a fatal head-on collision on NC Highway 16 near Grindstone Lane early Wednesday morning, October 22, 2025. The tragic incident claimed the life of 53-year-old Kelly Jordan Holleman of North Wilkesboro and left 61-year-old Laurie Christine Uk of West Jefferson critically injured, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers arrived at the scene around 7:00 a.m., finding two severely damaged vehicles — a 2018 Honda CR-V and a 2019 Subaru Forester — following the collision. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Honda CR-V, driven by Ms. Holleman, crossed the centerline and struck the oncoming Subaru head-on.
Despite the immediate response from emergency personnel, Kelly Jordan Holleman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Authorities noted that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Subaru, Laurie Christine Uk, sustained critical injuries and was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for emergency care. Her current condition remains unknown.
Investigators have stated that neither speed nor impairment appear to have contributed to the collision. Roadway or environmental conditions are being examined as potential factors. The crash prompted a temporary closure of NC Highway 16 for nearly three hours, during which troopers conducted a thorough on-scene reconstruction and cleared the roadway.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed that no charges will be filed, noting that the crash was tragic and unintentional.
Kelly’s passing has left a devastating impact on her family, friends, and the broader Wilkes and Ashe County communities. She was known for her kindness, dedication, and warmth, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Colleagues and neighbors remember her as a compassionate and caring individual whose sudden loss has created a profound void.
Community members have shared heartfelt tributes and condolences on social media, expressing shock and grief over the tragedy. Many have also offered prayers for Laurie Christine Uk, wishing her a full and swift recovery.
Officials continue to emphasize the importance of seatbelt safety and attentive driving as critical measures to prevent similar tragedies. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol urges motorists to remain vigilant, especially during morning commutes when visibility may be reduced and road conditions can vary.
As the investigation concludes, the community is coming together to honor Kelly Jordan Holleman — a woman whose life, kindness, and presence extended far beyond the vehicle she was driving. She was a cherished member of the community, a devoted friend, and a life taken far too soon.
May Kelly rest in eternal peace, and may her family, friends, and all who loved her find comfort in the memories and impact she leaves behind.
