In Loving Memory — Jessie and Nehemiah Locklear Killed in Mass Shooting at Late-Night Gathering in Robeson County

ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. — A late-night party in eastern North Carolina turned into a devastating scene of grief and chaos early Saturday morning after gunfire erupted, leaving Jessie Locklear, his son Nehemiah Locklear, and 13 others injured. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the deadly shooting took place on Dixon Drive, just outside the town of Maxton, at around 3:00 a.m.

According to Sheriff Burnis Wilkins, deputies responded to reports of shots fired at what authorities described as a large outdoor gathering attended by more than 150 people. By the time law enforcement arrived, the scene was already overwhelmed with confusion, fear, and heartbreak. Witnesses said that over 150 individuals scattered and fled the area as officers worked to secure the location and assess the victims.

Authorities have confirmed the two deceased victims as Jessie Locklear and his son, Nehemiah Locklear, whose deaths have sent shockwaves through the community. Several others sustained critical injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for emergency care. The full extent of their conditions has not yet been released.

“An Isolated Incident,” But a Community Forever Changed

Sheriff Wilkins stated that initial findings indicate the shooting was an isolated event, and there is currently no continuing threat to the broader community. However, the emotional impact left behind is immense.

“We know there were many people present when this occurred,” Sheriff Wilkins said.

“If you saw something or know something, we need you to come forward to help bring justice to the victims and their families.”

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office is receiving assistance from additional law enforcement agencies as detectives work to piece together what led to the violence. Investigators are actively seeking to determine:

  • The motive behind the shooting
  • The individuals responsible
  • Whether the violence stemmed from a dispute, targeted act, or escalation during the gathering

Authorities urgently encourage anyone who has information — especially those who attended the party — to contact Robeson County Sheriff’s Investigators at 910-671-3100.

A Community in Mourning

The deaths of Jessie and Nehemiah Locklear have left a deep void. Loved ones describe Jessie as a devoted father, hardworking, and respected in the community. Nehemiah, remembered as bright, kind, and full of life, was known for his close relationship with his father — the two were nearly inseparable.

Tributes, prayers, and condolences have begun pouring in across Robeson County, as community members attempt to cope with the shock of such sudden and senseless violence.

What should have been a night of celebration, laughter, and community gathering turned into a moment of unthinkable heartbreak — a reminder of how fragile life can be, and how deeply acts of violence can scar a community.

Seeking Justice

As the investigation continues, the Locklear family — and the many other families affected — are now left seeking answers, healing, and justice.

Anyone with information, no matter how small, is urged to come forward.

May Jessie and Nehemiah Locklear rest in peace.

May their memories be cherished, their lives honored, and their loved ones surrounded with comfort during this painful time.
