In Loving Memory: 35-Year-Old Ryan Cundiff Killed in Tragic Crash Near Spencer, Iowa

SPENCER, Iowa — A devastating crash near Spencer on Tuesday morning claimed the life of 35-year-old Ryan Cundiff of Spencer and left two others, including a 5-year-old child, injured. The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) confirmed details of the fatal accident, which occurred around 7:23 a.m. on County Road B24 in Clay County.

According to the ISP’s preliminary report, a Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Ryan Cundiff, was traveling west when it crossed the center line for reasons still under investigation. The vehicle collided head-on with an eastbound GMC Acadia, resulting in severe damage to both vehicles.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene but tragically pronounced Ryan Cundiff deceased. Authorities noted that Cundiff was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.

A 5-year-old child, also from Spencer, who was a passenger in the Traverse, was rescued from the wreckage and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries. The driver of the GMC Acadia, identified as a resident of Hartley, was also hospitalized. Their current conditions have not been publicly disclosed.

The Iowa State Patrol is leading the investigation, with assistance from local emergency responders, including the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Spencer Fire Department, and Spencer Hospital EMS. Authorities are working to determine what caused Cundiff’s vehicle to drift across the center line, though no official cause has yet been confirmed.

News of Ryan Cundiff’s death has left the Spencer community heartbroken. Friends, family, and neighbors remember him as a loving father and devoted community member whose life was tragically cut short. In the wake of this tragedy, loved ones have begun to share memories and express condolences, offering prayers and support for his family—especially the young child who survived the crash.

As investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the collision, the Iowa State Patrol reminds all drivers of the importance of seatbelt safety and maintaining focus while on the road, especially during early morning commutes when visibility and road conditions can vary.

This heartbreaking accident serves as a solemn reminder of how fragile life can be. The Spencer community joins together in mourning the loss of Ryan Cundiff, honoring his memory and offering strength to those who loved him most.
