CHICAGO, ILLINOIS — Deep sadness and heartbreak have swept across the West Garfield Park community following the tragic death of 16-year-old David Mason Jr., lovingly known as “Lil Dave” to family and friends. On Tuesday, October 21st, 2025, what began as a normal afternoon turned into a devastating tragedy when David was fatally shot near the corner of West End Avenue and Keeler Avenue, marking yet another painful reminder of the senseless violence that continues to steal young lives in Chicago.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers from the 11th District responded around 2:30 p.m. to reports of a person shot in the area. When they arrived, witnesses informed them that the victim had already been rushed to the hospital by someone at the scene.

Moments later, Mt. Sinai Hospital received a drop-off victim who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and arms. He was identified as David Mason Jr., a bright and kind-hearted teen whose life was tragically cut short. Despite doctors’ efforts, David was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Investigators say David had been standing near a sidewalk when unknown gunfire erupted, striking him several times. At this time, it remains unclear whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle. No arrests have been made, and Area Four detectives continue to investigate this heartbreaking case.

Family and friends describe David as a respectful, fun-loving, and hardworking young man who had big dreams for his future. He loved music, sports, and spending time with his friends, and was known for his warm smile and positive spirit. Those who knew him say he brought light into every room he walked into.

“David was a good kid — always polite, always smiling,” a family member said tearfully. “He didn’t deserve this. None of these kids do. We’re just heartbroken.”

This tragedy comes as Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence that has devastated countless families. Each name, each face, and each young life lost represents another deep wound in a city still searching for peace.

Community activists and neighbors are once again calling for action, unity, and accountability, emphasizing the urgent need to protect the city’s youth before more lives are taken too soon.
