LACKAWANNOCK TOWNSHIP, PA — Heartbreak has swept across Mercer County following a catastrophic crash that claimed the lives of 21-year-old Jacob Leathe, 19-year-old Urie Byler, 76-year-old Larry Miller, and 76-year-old Cynthia Miller on Friday evening at the intersection of West Middlesex Road and Orchard Road in Lackawannock Township. The Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that the deadly collision occurred around 7:30 p.m., leaving behind unimaginable grief and sorrow in the community.
According to the official PSP report, the crash involved a 2022 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Jacob Leathe, who was traveling at a high rate of speed along Mercer West Middlesex Road when tragedy struck. His passenger, Urie Byler, was riding alongside him when the vehicle violently collided with a 2025 Toyota Tacoma operated by Larry Miller, who was accompanied by his wife, Cynthia Miller.
Troopers say that upon impact, the Corvette veered off the roadway, struck an embankment, and flipped into the air before landing back on the pavement in a mangled wreck. The violent force of the crash proved fatal for both Leathe and Byler, who were pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.
Despite immediate emergency response, Larry and Cynthia Miller sustained severe, life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital, where both tragically succumbed to their injuries a short time later.
The Shenango Township Fire Chief’s Office confirmed the road was shut down between Bend Road and Flat Road for several hours as crews worked tirelessly to investigate, clear debris, and assist first responders. Firefighters, EMS personnel, and troopers described the crash as one of the most devastating incidents in recent memory.
The loss of four lives — spanning generations — has left a deep void in the hearts of two communities. Jacob Leathe and Urie Byler, both in the prime of their youth, are remembered as vibrant young men full of promise and energy. Friends recall their adventurous spirits and kind hearts that made a lasting impact on everyone around them.
Larry and Cynthia Miller, beloved residents of the Mercer area, were known for their warmth, humility, and lifelong devotion to family and faith. Their passing leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that touched countless lives over the decades.
As families on both sides mourn, the community has come together in prayer and remembrance — candles, flowers, and heartfelt messages now marking the site of the tragedy. Grieving loved ones are asking for continued compassion and privacy as they navigate this painful chapter.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash, examining speed, visibility, and other potential contributing factors. The Pennsylvania State Police are urging drivers to exercise caution and mindfulness, reminding everyone how quickly lives can change in an instant.
Four beautiful souls — Jacob Leathe (21), Urie Byler (19), Larry Miller (76), and Cynthia Miller (76) — gone far too soon. Their absence will be felt deeply, but their memories will forever remain etched in the hearts of all who knew and loved them.
