SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — Heartbreak has swept across communities in Colorado and Florida after 39-year-old Demario Torres, 37-year-old Erlande Torres, and their 9-year-old daughter, Abigail Israel, all of West Palm Beach, Florida, were killed in a devastating semitractor-trailer crash on Interstate 70 early Sunday morning, October 26.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the crash occurred around 5:42 a.m. near mile marker 208, just east of Silverthorne. The family had been traveling in the semi when it veered to the right while approaching a curve. Investigators say the vehicle then crossed back onto the roadway, struck the concrete center median, and subsequently rolled across multiple lanes of traffic.
As the semi rolled, it became fully engulfed in flames, blocking all lanes of I-70 and leaving drivers stranded for hours. Emergency responders worked tirelessly at the scene, but the fire was so intense that nothing could be done to save those inside. The Summit County Coroner’s Office later confirmed the identities of the three victims, describing the crash as “unimaginably tragic.”
The highway remained closed until approximately 6 p.m. that evening, causing major traffic delays through the mountain corridor. For many who passed through the area that day, the sight of the wreckage served as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change.
Investigation Ongoing
The Colorado State Patrol says the full crash investigation may take weeks or even months as officials analyze roadway evidence, vehicle condition, digital route data, and any mechanical or operator-related factors. The complexity of the crash and the fire damage mean investigators are approaching this case with painstaking detail.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash but has not yet spoken with investigators to come forward.
Witnesses should contact the Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 970-249-4392, referencing case number VC250372. Those calling will be asked to provide their name and contact information so investigators can follow up.
A Family Remembered
Demario and Erlande are being remembered by loved ones as deeply devoted parents and as a family rooted in love, faith, and community. Nine-year-old Abigail, described by relatives as joyful and bright, brought laughter and sunshine into every room she walked into.
Friends and family are now mourning from hundreds of miles away, as they begin the process of honoring the lives lost and planning arrangements.
A Community Grieves
In West Palm Beach, messages of support have poured in from neighbors, church members, co-workers, and classmates of Abigail. Many are praying, sending condolences, and expressing disbelief at the tragic news.
