OCALA, Fla. — The Ocala community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Shannon Rushing, a Forest High School senior who was tragically struck and killed Monday morning while walking to her school bus stop.
The incident occurred along Northwest Old Blitchton Road near Seventh Street. According to the Ocala Police Department, first responders immediately provided aid, but Shannon sadly passed away from her injuries. Her sudden and devastating loss has deeply affected family, friends, teachers, classmates, and the entire Marion County School District.
Shannon was more than just a student — she was a bright spirit, full of joy, humor, courage, and love.
A Young Life Full of Determination and Light
Shannon’s older sister, Shanta Norton, who has lovingly raised her since the passing of their mother, shared emotional words reflecting Shannon’s joyful personality and resilience.
“Shannon was a very friendly, outgoing person,” her sister said. “She had disabilities, but it didn’t stop her. She was in the Christian club, and she just joined one in school as a matter of fact — a very outgoing person.”
Shannon was known for her goofy laugh, her ability to make others smile, and her determination to never let challenges define her. She embraced life with faith and positivity, proudly participating in school clubs and activities, including the Christian club that brought her comfort, community, and joy.
Her school journey was rooted deeply in Marion County, having attended Ward-Highlands Elementary and Howard Middle School before becoming a beloved senior at Forest High. She was preparing for her future, filled with dreams, hope, and excitement for the years ahead.
A Community in Mourning
Forest High School and Marion County Public Schools have expressed their sorrow and shared support during this difficult time.
“We are heartbroken with this news and are supporting the family and school community during this difficult time,” school officials said.
Grief counselors have been made available at the school to help students and staff process the tragedy and begin healing.
Shannon’s absence is deeply felt in every hallway, every classroom, and every heart that had the privilege of knowing her.
