ATKINS, Ark. – According to officials, the incident began shortly before 4 p.m. when troopers observed a blue Nissan Versa being driven recklessly in the westbound lanes of I-40 near Atkins. Authorities said the driver, later identified as 49-year-old Andrea Thompson, was traveling well over the speed limit and weaving in and out of traffic.
Troopers reported that Thompson was seen passing other vehicles on the shoulder of the interstate, creating a dangerous situation for other motorists. At one point, she nearly collided with two other vehicles while attempting to flee. When emergency lights and sirens were activated, Thompson allegedly refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that continued along I-40 into Pope County.
In an effort to bring the dangerous pursuit to a safe conclusion, Arkansas State Police executed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) maneuver near Mile Marker 92. The technique, commonly used to end high-speed chases, caused the Nissan Versa to lose control and leave the roadway.
When the vehicle came to a stop, troopers discovered that Thompson had been ejected from the car during the crash. Emergency personnel immediately began life-saving measures, but despite their efforts, Andrea Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pope County coroner.
The interstate was temporarily shut down as investigators worked to document the scene, collect evidence, and reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division has taken over the case, and a full report will be submitted to the Pope County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
This tragic incident comes as state officials continue to address the risks associated with high-speed pursuits. Earlier this week, Arkansas State Police and prosecutors announced a state-wide crackdown aimed at reducing dangerous chases and promoting safer alternatives when suspects refuse to stop. Authorities said their goal is to protect innocent motorists and prevent tragedies like this from occurring on Arkansas highways.
No other injuries were reported in Wednesday’s crash, and the roadway has since fully reopened to traffic. The Arkansas State Police have not released additional details pending further investigation.
This marks yet another reminder of the dangers of fleeing law enforcement, with state officials urging drivers to comply when signaled to pull over — a decision that could mean the difference between life and death.
