The Sewanee football community is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Matthew Burrows, a cherished letterman, teammate, and friend whose spirit and dedication left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
During a heartfelt team meeting, Head Coach Travis McCollum reflected on Matthew’s time with the program and the profound influence he had both on and off the field. “Matthew was passionate, energetic, and hard-working — a player who loved his team and was loved right back,” Coach McCollum shared. “In every respect, he was the epitome of a good teammate, which in my opinion is the highest compliment a student-athlete can earn.”
Matthew’s commitment to excellence was evident in everything he did. He was a vital member of Coach McCollum’s 2023 and 2024 Sewanee Tigers teams, known for his infectious positivity and his unwavering dedication to the group’s shared goals. Whether during early morning practices or long game days, Matthew’s enthusiasm and determination were constants that inspired his teammates to give their best.
Off the field, Matthew shone just as brightly. His academic achievements reflected his character and discipline — he earned 2024 SAA Academic All-Conference honors, a testament to his ability to balance rigorous academics with the demands of collegiate athletics. At the team banquet this past winter, Matthew was presented with the Coach’s Award for Service to His Team, recognizing his leadership, reliability, and the countless ways he supported others without ever seeking recognition for himself.
Beyond his achievements, those who knew Matthew will remember his humor, his warm smile, and his natural ability to lift the spirits of those around him. He had a gift for making people feel valued and included — whether it was through a quick joke in the locker room or words of encouragement during a tough practice. His relentless intention to give everything he had — to his teammates, his coaches, and his community — defined him as both an athlete and a person.
To honor his legacy and the impact he made, the Sewanee football team will take the field this week wearing the initials “MB” on their helmets, a tribute to the teammate, student, and friend whose presence will forever be part of the program’s fabric.
Matthew Burrows’ memory will live on in the hearts of his Sewanee family — in the laughter shared, the lessons learned, and the countless lives he touched. Though his time with the Tigers was cut far too short, the spirit he brought to the game and to his teammates will continue to inspire for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Matthew. Your team, your coaches, and your Sewanee family will never forget you.
