The state of Ohio mourns the heartbreaking loss of Trooper Nicholas Cayton, a dedicated member of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who gave his life in the line of duty while serving and protecting others. Trooper Cayton’s final moments were spent doing what he had always done best — answering the call to help, ensuring the safety of others on our roads, and upholding the sacred oath he swore as a law enforcement officer.
On Wednesday, October 15, Trooper Cayton responded to a disabled tractor-trailer along State Route 11 near Canfield, a routine act of service that tragically became his last. While performing his duty with his emergency lights activated, his patrol vehicle was struck from behind in a devastating crash that took his life instantly. His dedication to his work and his courage in the face of danger will never be forgotten.
Those who knew Trooper Cayton describe him as kind, dependable, and deeply committed to his community. He was more than a trooper — he was a beloved son, friend, and colleague, known for his professionalism and compassion. Whether helping stranded motorists or comforting families in crisis, he embodied the very best of what it means to serve with integrity and heart.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost captured the essence of his service in his tribute:
“In service and sacrifice, Trooper Cayton honored the badge and fulfilled his sacred oath to the community. My deepest condolences are with the friends, family, and colleagues of this fallen hero.”
Across Ohio, flags fly at half-staff, patrol cruisers are draped in mourning bands, and communities stand united in grief and gratitude for a man who gave everything for the safety of others. Fellow troopers remember him not only for his bravery but for his humor, humility, and unwavering sense of duty — qualities that made him both a respected officer and a cherished friend.
As the Ohio State Highway Patrol family gathers to honor his memory, they reaffirm the promise that Trooper Cayton lived by: to protect and serve with courage, no matter the cost.
May Trooper Nicholas Cayton rest in eternal peace, his watch now complete. His legacy of service, sacrifice, and love for his community will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
