INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — The community of Caney is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 21-year-old Heath Ellis, who tragically lost his life in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Tuesday morning, October 28, 2025, along U.S. Highway 75, just southwest of Independence.
According to Montgomery County Sheriff Ron Wade, the fatal wreck occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. near the intersection of County Road 3600. Deputies and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle that had left the roadway and overturned. Upon arrival, they discovered a 2024 Kia that had crashed, struck a concrete culvert, and erupted into flames.
Inside the vehicle, authorities found Heath Ellis, who was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene. The Independence Rural Fire Department and Independence Fire Department quickly worked to extinguish the flames, allowing investigators from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department to begin their assessment and remains recovery operation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not yet determined why the vehicle left the roadway. Sheriff Wade stated that no additional details will be released until the investigation is complete.
