San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nuñez Killed in Rancho Cucamonga Shooting

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and the entire Inland Empire community are mourning the devastating loss of Deputy Andrew Nuñez, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on Monday afternoon, October 27, 2025.

According to Sheriff Shannon Dicus, the fatal shooting occurred shortly after 12:37 p.m. in a residential neighborhood on the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga, just north of Victoria Gardens. Deputies had responded to reports of an armed man threatening a woman when they were immediately met with gunfire upon arrival.

Deputy Nuñez, a six-year veteran of the department who served the Rancho Cucamonga community for the past five years, was struck by a single gunshot wound to the head. Despite being quickly rushed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at 1:13 p.m.

Sheriff Dicus spoke emotionally during a press conference, confirming that Deputy Nuñez leaves behind his wife, their 2-year-old daughter, and an unborn child. He is also survived by his mother and four siblings. “Andrew was a dedicated public servant, a devoted husband, and a loving father,” Dicus said. “He gave his life protecting others, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle, triggering a high-speed chase through Rancho Cucamonga and onto the 210 Freeway near Upland. The pursuit ended in a violent crash after what Sheriff Dicus described as a “legal intervention” by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy, who struck the motorcycle to stop the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Outside Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, dozens of law enforcement officers gathered in silent solidarity, standing at attention as they honored their fallen brother. Members of the community and family were seen arriving at the hospital, embracing one another in grief and disbelief.

Deputy Nuñez’s death marks a profound loss not only for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department but also for the residents of Rancho Cucamonga, where he was known as a compassionate, hardworking, and dedicated officer who always put others before himself.

Sheriff Dicus expressed deep sorrow, calling the tragedy a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day while serving and protecting their communities. “We stand with Andrew’s family, his fellow deputies, and everyone whose lives he touched. His bravery and devotion to duty will forever be remembered.”

Flags across San Bernardino County are expected to be lowered to half-staff in his honor. Funeral arrangements and memorial service details will be announced in the coming days.

Deputy Andrew Nuñez — a husband, father, son, brother, and hero — gave his life in service to others. His courage, compassion, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Rest in Peace, Deputy Nuñez.
