Meridian, Mississippi — October 27, 2025: The Meridian community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 19-year-old Tayshana Reed, who tragically passed away Sunday afternoon following a shooting that occurred late Saturday night.
Authorities responded to the scene in the 500 block of 11th Avenue just before 10 p.m. Saturday. According to officials, Meridian Police, Metro officers, and members of the Meridian Fire Department arrived to find Tayshana suffering from a gunshot wound. She was immediately transported to a local hospital, where medical personnel worked urgently to stabilize her. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later airlifted to Jackson for further treatment. Despite every effort to save her life, Tayshana passed away on Sunday.
The Lauderdale County Coroner, Stella McMahan, confirmed Tayshana’s identity, marking a devastating moment for her family and friends who are now left to grieve a loss that came far too soon. At just 19 years old, Tayshana was a young woman with her life ahead of her — a daughter, a friend, and a light to many who knew her.
Authorities say the suspect fled the area after the shooting, but was taken into custody around 1 a.m. Sunday. As of now, the suspect’s identity has not been released to the public. Police have not yet detailed what led to the violence, but they confirm the investigation is ongoing.
Officials also indicated that they will release updates, including information surrounding the recent Manning Street homicide investigation, during a press conference scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Monday at Meridian Police Headquarters.
This tragedy has not only left a family shattered, but has also shaken a community already weary from recent violence. Friends and loved ones are now sharing memories of Tayshana — remembering her laughter, her warmth, and the dreams she carried.
A Beautiful Life Remembered
Those close to Tayshana describe her as gentle-hearted, loving, and hopeful. She was known for her bright smile and the compassion she carried with her wherever she went. She was a young woman who loved deeply and was loved deeply in return.
Her passing serves as yet another painful reminder of the rising violence affecting communities across Mississippi and beyond — violence that continues to rob families of futures, hopes, and peace.
As Meridian prepares for answers in the days ahead, the family now faces the unimaginable: planning to lay their 19-year-old daughter to rest.
May this community wrap its arms around them.
May her memory remain a blessing.
May justice be served.
Rest in Peace, Tayshana Reed.
Gone too soon. Never forgotten.
