LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — What began as a joyful night of pride, tradition, and reunion at Pennsylvania’s historic Lincoln University ended in heartbreak and chaos Saturday evening, when gunfire erupted during a crowded homecoming event. One person was killed and six others were shot during the violence, shattering what was meant to be a celebratory homecoming weekend.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. during a large tailgate-style gathering near the university’s football stadium. The event had drawn not only students but alumni and supporters who traveled from across the region to celebrate the legacy of the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
“This is a devastating night in southern Chester County at Lincoln University,” Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said during a press conference on Sunday. “It was a chaotic scene and people fled in every direction.”
One Dead, Six Injured; Additional Injuries Reported From Panic
Officials confirmed that one individual was killed, though the victim’s identity is being withheld until their family is notified. Six others were treated for gunshot wounds, and authorities noted that several more attendees suffered injuries while attempting to escape the scene. Exact numbers were not immediately released.
The emotional toll was clear as officials spoke, emphasizing the pain felt across the university and surrounding communities.
Possible Multiple Shooters
Police detained one person found in possession of a firearm near the scene. However, authorities have not yet announced formal charges, and investigators stressed that it remains too early to determine their role.
Preliminary evidence indicates that multiple gunmen may have been involved.
“We’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus,” de Barrena-Sarobe said. “There is viable evidence of multiple shooters in the parking lot area.”
Officials believe the violence likely stemmed from a dispute that escalated, not a planned attack on the university or homecoming events.
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police, and Lincoln University Police Department are jointly leading the investigation.
Anyone with photos, videos, or information is strongly urged to come forward.
A Campus and Community in Mourning
Founded in 1854, Lincoln University holds a landmark place in American history. Its alumni include:
- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall
- Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin
- Namibian Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa
Homecoming weekend is traditionally one of the most joyful events on campus — a time to honor those who came before, celebrate student achievement, and strengthen ties among alumni, current students, and community members.
“This was meant to be a joyous occasion,” said Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee. “Instead, that joy was interrupted by senseless gunfire. Our hearts are with all who were impacted.”
Support Services and Statements From Leaders
The university briefly went into lockdown Saturday night; the order was lifted after officials confirmed there was no ongoing threat.
Lincoln University released a statement early Sunday morning announcing that counseling and support services would be offered to students, staff, and alumni in need.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also responded, stating that his administration is prepared to assist.
Chester County Commissioner Eric Roe called for prayers for the Lincoln University community and the law enforcement officers working the case.
A Celebration Interrupted — But Not Erased
Earlier in the day, Lincoln University held its annual homecoming football game against Elizabeth City State University — a spirited occasion filled with cheering crowds, marching band performances, and alumni reunions. The tailgate event that followed was meant to continue that celebration of excellence, legacy, and pride.
Instead, the night ended in fear, grief, and urgent questions — questions the community is now leaning on one another to face.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains active and fluid. No motive has been confirmed, and officials are reviewing surveillance footage, social media recordings, and witness statements.
Anyone who may have seen or recorded anything is urged to contact law enforcement.
This tragedy has left Lincoln University grieving — but also united in determination, love, and the strength of its historic legacy. As healing begins, the community stands together, honoring the past while refusing to allow violence to define its future.
