The Georgetown Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) is actively investigating a devastating hit-skip (hit-and-run) crash that claimed the life of 22-year-old Caleb Holbert of Russellville early Friday morning, October 24. The incident occurred along state Route 125 near mile marker 16, in Jefferson Township.
Authorities responded after an unresponsive individual was discovered partially lying in the roadway. It was later confirmed that the victim was Caleb Holbert, who had been walking along the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, offering no aid and leaving the area without reporting the collision.
Despite emergency response efforts, Caleb succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
During the course of the investigation, troopers located a vehicle part belonging to a Ford, suggesting that the suspect vehicle may be a Ford model. At this time, the driver has not been identified, and investigators continue working to locate the vehicle and the person responsible.
State Route 125 remains closed as the investigation continues, with ODOT crews on scene managing traffic and assisting law enforcement.
Multiple agencies have come together in response, including the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Brown County Coroner’s Office, Russellville Fire Department & EMS, and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Caleb’s passing has left the Russellville community in deep sorrow. At just 22 years old, he was a young man with life ahead of him — full of direction, friendships, love, and promise. His family, friends, and community now mourn a loss that feels immeasurable.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help. Anyone who may have seen something — a noise, a vehicle, a broken headlight, or any suspicious behavior — is urged to come forward. Even the smallest detail could provide the piece needed to bring justice.
