TULSA, OK — October 21, 2025 –Heartbreaking tragedy has struck the Tulsa Boys Home after a 16-year-old resident died Monday morning in what authorities describe as a self-inflicted shooting. According to officials with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred while an off-duty Tulsa Police Officer was on the premises teaching an archery class.
Preliminary reports indicate that the young man somehow gained access to the officer’s service weapon. Investigators say the teen grabbed the firearm directly from the officer’s holster and then shot himself, resulting in fatal injuries. The devastating event unfolded suddenly and left staff and other residents at the facility in shock.
Emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, but despite urgent efforts to save him, the 16-year-old was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released his name pending family notification.
The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office has taken the lead on the investigation to ensure a thorough and impartial review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials will be working to determine how the firearm became accessible and whether proper safety protocols were followed during the officer’s visit.
Representatives from the Tulsa Police Department have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that the off-duty officer involved is cooperating fully with investigators and is receiving support as the investigation continues.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” a Tulsa County spokesperson said. “Our hearts are with the family of the young man, as well as the staff and residents of the Tulsa Boys Home who are now coping with this terrible loss.”
The Tulsa Boys Home, located west of downtown Tulsa, provides residential care, education, and therapy for boys ages 11 to 18 who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect. Many residents are placed there through the juvenile system or the Department of Human Services.
Counselors and crisis teams have been made available to both residents and staff in the aftermath of the shooting, as the tight-knit community struggles to process the loss of one of their own.
